The Capitals got standout performances from a number of players in a solid 4-2 win in Columbus.

Thursday's tilt against the Columbus Blue Jackets presented a big opportunity for several Washington Capitals, and a hot start and solid all-around performance — especially from a headful of call-ups — led to a win.

Riley Sutter had a goal and assist, while Beck Malenstyn, Aliaksei Protas and Hendrix Lapierre scored and Charlie Lindgren put on a show in net en route to a 4-2 victory.

Here are all the takeaways from the win.

Capitals' Call-Ups Step Up

The Capitals called up Sutter, Chase Priskie and Ethen Frank, who were part of Sunday's cuts, for Thursday's tilt on the road, and they made the most of their opportunity back up with the big club in Ohio.

Sutter had a multi-point performance, but he was also solid in generating pressure and speed on the fourth line while doing an excellent job on the penalty kill. He assisted on Beck Malenstyn's first goal of the game, and in the final minutes of the third, crashed the net for a shorthanded goal to give his team an insurance goal.

In addition to Sutter, Priskie also put on an impressive performance playing top-4 minutes alongside Hardy Häman Aktell, who continues to shine for D.C.

Priskie was moving the puck well and doing a good job of controlling the tempo, and he was mobile and doing what he could to keep the play alive in the offensive zone while making plays on the fly. It paid off as he picked up an assist after Aliaksei Protas backhanded in a rebound off his initial point shot.

Priskie and Frank were both tied with Ivan Miroshnichenko for the team lead in shots (4), while Sutter managed three of his own.

McMichael Continues To Shine & Lapierre Gets Empty-Netter As Both Get Top-6 Minutes, Miroshnichenko Has Chances

Connor McMichael, who led his team with 10 shots in Tuesday's preseason win in Boston, kept the good times rolling in Columbus. The 22-year-old was agile and generating speed and plenty of high-quality chances, and he was also solid at center, winning 11 of 14 draws (79 percent). He also got an assist shorthanded while helping Sutter crash the net on a late penalty kill, and he got time with Alex Ovechkin and Miroshnichenko to boot.

Lapierre, meanwhile, played a majority of the night with Ovechkin and Miroshnichenko, but also skated with Aliaskei Protas and Anthony Mantha. He skated 17:58 and sealed the deal with an empty-net goal, all while generating some good plays and pressure. Miroshnichenko, meanwhile, continues to look more comfortable. He had some great reads and plays to Ovechkin, and he also had some grade-A shots.

Lindgren Stands Tall, Capitals Control Majority Of Game

Charlie Lindgren got the full game on Thursday, as Darcy Kuemper played backup with both goaltenders getting some dress rehearsals in prior to the start of their seasons. And, as was the case against Detroit just a week ago, he was impressive again.

The 29-year-old was moving well in the crease, agile and flexible and helping his team out with some huge saves, including a point-blank glove stop to shut down a breakaway. He ended the night with 21 saves on 23 shots (.913 save percentage).

Still, the team in front of him made it easy, as Washington did a good job of tilting the ice early. The Capitals outshot Columbus 17-5 in the first period, and despite sliding back a bit in the second frame, still sustained pressure and took the momentum back to stop the Jackets in their tracks. Ultimately, Washington outshot CBJ 39-23.

Top Shelf Takes

- Alex Alexeyev had a solid game as well, looking steady while playing alongside Nick Jensen on the top pair. Lucas Johansen had some good speed and solid play, too.

- Dylan McIlrath had a fight and a team-leading three hits.

- Ovechkin's shot is still very much lethal.

- Speaking of Ovechkin: Man, was he looking for Miroshnichenko to get a goal. Made some great plays over to his countrymate.

- Mantha had a couple of good looks, too, and appears to be more dialed in as the regular season gets closer.
