Jeff Curry — USA TODAY Sports - Takeaways: Ovechkin Continues Historic Run, He & McMichael Power Capitals To Dominant Bounceback Win Over Blues

Saturday's tilt with the St. Louis Blues was exactly the game that Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals were looking for.

Head coach Spencer Carbery called his group out pregame, saying that its play and winning identity to start the season slipped over the last handful of games and that the team needed to get back to its style of play.

The Capitals did just that. Alex Ovechkin struck twice, and Connor McMichael, Jakob Chychrun, Logan Thompson and more shined in a dominant 8-1 team win over St. Louis.

Here are all the takeaways from the victory.

Ovechkin Strikes Twice As Strome & Top Line Keeps Humming; Power-Play Breaks Through

After a bit of a slow start to action, Alex Ovechkin got his team going, as the top line stayed hot and the power play finally broke through.

In the second period with the game tied 1-1, Ovechkin finished off a picture-perfect passing play from Aliaksei Protas and Dylan Strome to put his team in the lead from which it never looked back.

That first line of Ovechkin, Strome and Protas has combined for 13 goals at 5-on-5 through 14 games this season.

The Great 8 wasn't done there, though; he would finally help the power play bust out, scoring on a nice feed from Strome to extend D.C.'s lead.

Ovechkin now sits at 10 goals this season and is just 32 away from passing Wayne Gretzky. He's on pace to finish with 59 goals this season. His first goal of the game stood as the game-winner, and he needs just five more GWGs to pass Jaromir Jagr (135) for the most in NHL history.

Meanwhile, Strome has assisted on each of Ovechkin's goals this season, and his 15 points at 5-on-5 are ranked for second in the NHL. He added another assist in the third for a three-assist night. He ranks fifth in the NHL in points.

McMichael Stays Red-Hot, Continues PP Success

Not only did Ovechkin keep his hot streak alive, but so did Connor McMichael. The 23-year-old is on pace for 53 goals himself as he scored his ninth of the season just 59 seconds into action.

He wasn't done there, adding his 10th goal of the year (tied with Ovechkin for the team lead) on the team's second power-play of the game. D.C. went 2-for-2 on the man advantage.

McMichael also added an assist and has points in six of his last seven outings and has found the scoresheet in all but three games this season. He is producing at over a point-per-game pace, and Saturday marked his third multi-goal outing

Chychrun Dazzles In Return From Injury

Washington also got a big boost on the blue line, as Jakob Chychrun returned after missing the last five games with an upper-body injury. It marked the first time since the second period of the season opener that head coach Spencer Carbery had all of his regular blueliners healthy — and it made a major difference.

Chychrun was outstanding for Washington, moving the puck effectively, playing strong defense with John Carlson and logging heavy minutes. The 26-year-old had a goal of his own and an assist, and his plus/minus rating of plus-7 is impressive to say the least.

Getting Chychrun back is huge as he plays such a key role at both ends of the ice. His return to the d-corps also led to Washington surrendering less than 30 shots for the first time in four games, all of which he was absent for.

Thompson Stands Tall For Record Start With Capitals

The Capitals were able to cushion their lead with four unanswered goals, but a big reason for their win was Logan Thompson's play between the pipes.

Thompson, who is putting himself on Team Canada's radar, was stellar, making some huge saves — including a handful with the right catching mitt and a late diving save on Pavel Buchnevich — en route to his seventh consecutive victory with Washington.

The 27-year-old stopped 24 of 25 shots and has a save percentage of .948 over the last three games. He remains undefeated to open his Capitals tenure and set a franchise record for the longest win streak to start with the franchise.

    Top Shelf Takes

    - Tom Wilson had two assists and has six points in his last six games.

    - Rasmus Sandin scored the team's fifth goal of the night, and now has goals in back-to-back games.

    - Mike Sgarbossa got a goal and assist as he drew in for Hendrix Lapierre after a recall.

    - Jakub Vrana also picked up a helper, extending his point streak to four games.

    - Andrew Mangiapane has points in back-to-back games.

    - Washington is undefeated after losses this season.

    - Brandon Duhaime also got in on the scoring fun with his third goal of the season.
