Washington and Thompson agreed to a six-year, $31.5 million extension that carries an average AAV of $5.85 million. He replaced Darcy Kuemper while establishing a new 1A/1B tandem with Charlie Lindgren, who stole the starting spot last season. Thompson has been stellar for Washington so far, going 22-2-3 with a .925 save percentage, which ranks second among all NHL goaltenders with at least 20 games played, and a 2.09 GAA. He also ranks second in goals saved above expected (26.8). The only goalie with better numbers is reigning Vezina champion Connor Hellebuyck. The 27-year-old has also shown that he can maintain consistent play over multiple consecutive starts and has the potential to be the new No. 1. The goaltending rotation has continued for D.C., though, with him and Lindgren alternating games.
