The Capitals are the top team in the East.

ARLINGTON, V.A. — Not surprisingly, Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson was not on the ice for practice on Monday, as he's being evaluated further after suffering a facial injury on Saturday in Montreal.

Wilson took a Jakob Chychrun shot to the left cheek in Saturday's win over the Canadiens. There was significant swelling in his left cheek after the fact, though he returned to the game and scored two goals en route to the victory.

"When the puck hits you, I feel like the side of my face is falling off a little," Wilson told reporters after the team's win over the Montreal Canadiens. "Am I bleeding, am I cut? What's going on?"

Per head coach Spencer Carbery, the concern level isn't high, but the Capitals want to be sure to take as many precautions as possible.

"You just have to make sure there's nothing structurally wrong," Carbery said. "So that's what we're in the process of."

Washington doesn't play again until Thursday when it visits the Columbus Blue Jackets, and hopefully for D.C., Wilson will be on that trip.

The 30-year-old has 11 goals and 22 points through 27 games this season and has seven points in his last six games. He has been a key contributor and leader of late for the Capitals, who are currently missing captain Alex Ovechkin due to a broken left fibula.

Carbery also applauded Wilson's "selflessness" when it came to returning to play and pushing through the injury.

"It's just such an example of selflessness and whatever it takes to help a team win a hockey game," Carbery added.
