David Gustafsson extended his point streak to four games against the Montreal Canadiens last night and has started to find his role in the Winnipeg Jets' bottom six.
During this four-game streak, the 24-year-old has recorded one goal and three assists. Before the streak started, Gustafsson had failed to record a point this season. The recent boost in offensive play could be attributed to the increased opportunity and that he is finally healthy. During the 2024-25 campaign, Gustafsson has dealt with a lower-body injury and a concussion.
With Adam Lowry out of the lineup, Gustafsson has seen his ice time increase and played a season-high 13:17. With the Jets clinging onto a 2-1 lead, Gustafsson was first to a loose puck, won a board battle and set up Kyle Connor with 1.5 remaining in the second period.
Too often throughout the season, Gustafsson was a passenger. He had opportunities to make plays with the puck or be the first on the forecheck but elected to hang back. Recently, the Tingsryd, SWE native has been engaged and active in all three zones.
Lowry is still listed as week-to-week but once he returns, a forward will have to exit the lineup. Gustafsson's play needs to remain at this level to keep himself out of the press box.
