Brandon Wheat Kings goaltender Carson Bjarnason has officially signed his entry-level contract.
The Brandon Wheat Kings have yet another player under NHL contract, as the Philadelphia Flyers announced a three-year, entry-level deal for goaltender Carson Bjarnason.
The contract carries a $950K annual average value if he plays with the Flyers, and an $83K pay day in the minors.
“It’s a huge accomplishment for him,” Wheat Kings head coach and general manager Marty Murray said in a team release. “I think we all grew up wanting a chance to play in the NHL and this is another step for him. Getting drafted and then being signed is the next phase.”
The Carberry, MB. product was chosen 51st overall in the second round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Flyers this past June.
The 18-year-old signed on the dotted line midway through Philadelphia's training camp, following his appearance at the team's rookie camp earlier in the fall.
Bjarnason earned a bronze medal for Canada last year at the World Under-18 Championships, while posting a 3.08 goals against average and .900 save percentage in Brandon on a struggling Wheat Kings team.
“As a 17-year-old, there’s not too many that are unanimous number one starters like he was,” Murray added. “He took that opportunity and ran with it. It was great to see him get rewarded with the draft and now with the signing.”
Once officially sent back to Junior from Philadelphia, Bjarnason will begin his third WHL season - all of which have been played in Manitoba. He owns a career 29-29-6 regular season record with three shutouts to his name in 70 games.
