The Columbus Blue Jackets have a big off-season ahead of them. There are tons of decisions to be made on their own UFAs and RFAs. But with the cap going up and the Blue Jackets holding a lot of space, they might be in a position to offer sheet a top RFA on the open market.

It’s important to remember that he’ll need to sign Adam Fantilli next off-season, and that deal will take up a portion of the cap. However, they will still have plenty of cap space to throw at an offer-sheet if they wanted.

There are some big names that could be available for an offer sheet—but which ones would GM Don Waddell actually be interested in?

The one that makes the most sense for them to target is Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks.

There’s been some chatter that the fit between him and the Ducks hasn’t been perfect, so there’s a chance he’d be open to a fresh start. It also helps that he’s got some chemistry with Kent Johnson from their time playing together internationally.

MacTavish, 22, has played parts of four seasons with the Ducks. Last season, he set a new career high with 52 points in 76 games. He’s a former 3rd overall pick from the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s performed well within the organization, but there’s a chance he’s growing unhappy with the direction of the team and could be looking for a fresh start with a team on the rise like Columbus.

If Waddell were to offer sheet anyone, McTavish should be the guy. A deal in the $5.5–$6 million range for 4–5 years could get it done. That would cost the Blue Jackets a first- and a third-round pick. But with two first-rounders—Minnesota’s and their own—they might be more comfortable moving one if it means bringing in a talented player like McTavish.
