The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Islanders 6-4 in a high-scoring thriller Sunday night at Lenovo Center.

Dmitry Orlov scored the go-ahead goal in the third period and Seth Jarvis (2g) and Sebastian Aho (1g, 3pts) led the team in scoring.

After the game, Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour along with Orlov, Aho and Jarvis spoke with the media. Here's what they had to say:

    Rod Brind'Amour

On finding ways to win: You have to find ways. Whatever way you have to do it. Obviously it wasn't the prettiest of games, but there were actually some really nice goals, so it was kind of the good and the bad mixed in there, but I thought we had some good individual efforts that led to some goals. And our penalty kill was really good tonight. I think that was the difference.

On being without Jordan Staal: That's a big hole for a lot of things we do as a group, but we had to fill the shoes and [Mark Jankowski]  did a nice job obviously and [Jesperi Kotkaniemi] kind of filled the role up top with that line, so that was a real positive for the game.

On the shorthanded chemistry between Seth Jarvis and Sebastian Aho: We've seen it all year, especially on the special teams. It's such a crucial time of the game. If you can score on it, that's just a back breaker. So we love it, love seeing it. There's kind of more open ice and obviously the power play guys are not thinking about stopping goals. So there's some good opportunities and he's obviously taken advantage of it.

On the penalty kill: Obviously we had too many [penalties] tonight. That's not a recipe for success. But the guys who had to kill tonight did a real good job.

On Dmitry Orlov's slapshot: That was obviously the turning point in the game. You just don't know when those shots are going to get through, but when you can hammer it like he can, get a little traffic, get a little bit of stuff at the net and you never know. It's good to see.

On the difficulty of jumping back into the lineup as the season comes to a close: [Orlov] been back now for a little while, but I don't know. He's been around. I don't think it affects him too much. I think maybe [Andrei Svechnikov], who had been out for a few weeks and now he's jumping in to two pretty intense games. So that'd be more about him right now, because you can see and I didn't think he had his best tonight. But yeah, it takes a little time.

On Pyotr Kochetkov: It's like that for anything. Like we're taking penalties, so okay, that area of our game, our penalty kill, has to be good and it was. If we're giving up too many goals, then we better score more and find a way. I think good teams find ways to do it and maybe it's not the way you draw it up, but you have to adapt during the game.

On Alex Ovechkin coming to town Wednesday and his chase for the all-time goal record: He's an amazing player. Obviously going to be the best goal scorer of all time, which that in and of itself is amazing. We never thought that was going to get touched. Having had a first-row seat for most of his career and seeing, I don't know how many, goals go in, you just tip your hat. There's certain players... It's just gonna happen. Do I want it on that night, no, definitely not, but it'll be special when it does happen.

On Tyson Jost: It's a tough role and I think you have to accept it. You have to understand what that means. It means maybe you're in and out of the lineup, minutes up or down, right wing or left wing. He's just, 'Ok, whatever, coach,' and having the right attitude helps. It certainly helps with the group because everybody knows that that's not ideal, but how you handle it affects the next guy, so he's been a real pro and yeah, he was impactful tonight and made a couple of plays that made the difference.

    Dmitry Orlov

On getting back up to speed since returning from injury: Yeah, for sure. I think it's important, especially with not a lot of games left. Just finding the way we're going to play in the postseason. Obviously it's not easy at the end of the season, especially as teams battle for playoffs, but today some individual plays made us win. Important for us to work as a team and try to build our game for the playoffs.

On his slapshot: With that, I probably just need to shoot more when I have a chance. Especially with our game. Building a lot of shots and pressure on the ice.

On preparing for Alex Ovechkin on Wednesday: Just play closer to him and not give him a chance to shoot. But still he finds ways to score. He's done it so many times obviously, but you're not worried about one player. You work as a team against how they play and you just sometimes need help from your partners to make sure he's not shooting or not open. We'll see. We try to control what we can do, but we'll see what's going to happen.

    Sebastian Aho

On his offensive production: It was good. Created a lot of offense and obviously scored a few goals as well. It was good.

On his shorthanded chemistry with Seth Jarvis: I've said it before. There's really no set plays on the PK. Just, [Jaccob Slavin] knocks the puck down and I end up getting it. Good talk by him, he's yelling 'Time, time, time,' so I knew I had time to turn and look and obviously I saw Jarvy flying up through the neutral zone. Just an easy pass and then he took over and did the rest with a nice shot in the net.

On guys stepping up: An absolute bomb by [Orlov]. He has a great shot. Happy to see him get one and it was a huge goal by him at the time. It wasn't pretty at times tonight. It was kind of a rough game, but you have to be able to win in different ways. That was one example of individual efforts to give us a goal.

On going against a team pushing for their playoff lives: They were battling hard and so were we. We knew that they were going to come hard and we just had to match it. I think we did a pretty good job of matching that desperation level. A hard fought game.

On the power play: Obviously it's always nice to score, but yeah, as a unit, you just work. You can tell that we have scored a few as of late because we're feeling a bit more confident and making better plays. Just have a little bit of confidence there. It's been good.

    Seth Jarvis

On tying the franchise record for most shorthanded goals in a season (5): It's cool. Have to give credit to the guy I'm playing with [Aho]. He's set me up a lot this year. But yeah, it's fun to be able to do something cool like that and hopefully, there's a few more games to try and break that.

On if there's a future in management after his career is over (as the person he's tied with is Kevyn Adams, the GM in Buffalo): Me a being a GM? F--- no. God no. No. No. Yeah, I'm not going to be a GM ever.

On finding a way to win: A lot of guys contributed. It's nice. The power play is still... we're kind of hot right now, so we're figuring it out a little bit more and yeah, just scoring in different ways, different lines. Obviously Janko's goal to start us off was huge and then like you said, rolling from there. Got kicked in the ding-ding a little bit, but we figured it out.

On closing in on the 30-goal mark: I'm not as hard on myself as I was before, so that probably helps. Building chemistry as much as I can and really just focusing on putting the puck into the net. Sometimes you can go through practice and go through the motions a little bit, but I think I've done a good job when I get the opportunity to focus on scoring in practice, that it translates to games and I think that's what I'm seeing right now.

On where his shorthanded goal ranks for himself personally: We'll go top-5 all-time. I don't know. That was a fun one. It was nice to see a shot go in like that for once.

On Dmitry Orlov's slapshot: That thing's heavy. You're just trusting that that one's going in and it was real nice to see him get rewarded tonight. He's been playing well and just hasn't quite gotten the bounces. So to see him score, and you could see it in his celebration, how happy he was and we were all pumped for him.

On Alex Ovechkin coming to town: I don't even want to think about it. We just don't want to be that team that gives him that goal. So every night we have a challenge, but he's been on a heater all year and against a really good team, it will be a good test.
