Just as the Toronto Maple Leafs were starting to get healthy, a couple of their crucial players missed time in their 5-4 overtime win against the Boston Bruins.

Chris Tanev took a hit from Bruins forward John Beecher in his second shift of the game. He went to the dressing room shortly after and didn't return to the game with what the Maple Leafs called an upper-body injury.

"He'll get evaluated tomorrow," Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said following the game. "Upper body. I don't know. We'll see."

Tanev has been one of Toronto's most vital defensemen this season. He's relied upon in every situation, averages nearly 20 minutes a game, and is second in the league with 151 blocked shots.

"He brings a lot to our team. Obviously, one of the best d-men in the league, in my opinion," Morgan Rielly said Tuesday night. "We hope he's not out too long. Hopefully he's back soon."

The 35-year-old has missed just one game this season. According to Sportsnet's Luke Fox, Tanev was seen leaving Boston's TD Garden with his right arm in a sling.

"He plays against all the top lines. You miss a lot of things," Berube added. "Penalty kill, all the hard work and gritty stuff he does on the back end and leadership. There's a lot of stuff you miss. He's a very important player for us."

Tanev joined the Maple Leafs on a six-year, $27 million contract on July 1.

It wasn't just Tanev dealing with an injury against Boston on Tuesday night.

William Nylander didn't take a shift in overtime and was pictured on TSN's broadcast with his gloves off just before Mitch Marner scored the game-winner.

"Just came back (to the bench) and something was bothering him, so he didn't go in overtime," Berube said of Nylander.

Like Tanev, Nylander has been one of Toronto's most consistent players this season. He's appeared in all 58 games for the Maple Leafs and has 58 points (33 goals, 25 assists), the second-highest total on the team behind Marner.

The 28-year-old's ailment that kept him out of overtime is unknown. He finished the game with one shot in 21:21 of ice time.

Nylander is coming off the 4 Nations Face-Off where he scored two assists in three games with Sweden.
