Two New Jersey Devils players will be away from the team indefinitely.

Forward Michael McLeod and defenseman Cal Foote requested and were granted leaves of absence from the Devils, the team announced on Wednesday.

"The club will have no further comment at this time," the team said in a statement.

McLeod and Foote were absent from Wednesday's practice, according to Amanda Stein, the Devils' team reporter. Both skaters played in the Devils' previous game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Monday.

McLeod, 25, has 10 goals and nine assists for 19 points in 45 games this season. The Mississauga, Ont., native is in his sixth NHL season since the Devils drafted him 12th overall in 2016. In 287 career games, he has 29 goals and 56 assists for 85 points. Before he began his NHL career, McLeod played for Team Canada in the 2017 and 2018 World Junior Championships.

Foote signed with New Jersey in August 2023 and has played four NHL games this season, recording one assist. He also has seven assists and nine points in 24 games for the AHL's Utica Comets. The 25-year-old from Denver, Col., has 145 games of NHL experience since the Tampa Bay Lightning drafted him 14th overall in 2017, with 20 career points. Like McLeod, Foote played for Team Canada's world junior team in 2018, winning a gold medal.

This week has also seen Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart and Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube being granted leaves of absence. The Flyers stated Hart's absence is for "personal reasons," while the Flames said Dube is attending to his mental health and "is under the care of health professionals."
