The Swiss club SC Langenthal announced last week its withdrawal from the PostFinance Women's League (PFWL) at the end of the season, and the dissolution of its team.

This decision was made by the club's board of directors, whose men's team plays in the MyHockey League, the third tier of Swiss hockey.

Walter Ryser, the chairman of the board, explained: "Continuing this project would have been irresponsible, as the development undertaken represented a financial drain for us, and we are not in a position to compete financially with the National League clubs."

The club cited financial difficulties and the inability to field a competitive squad. In recent years, the PFWL has seen its level of play improve and budgets increase, particularly thanks to the involvement of major Swiss clubs such as Zug, Bern, and Davos.

After a spectacular rise through several divisions, SC Langenthal Damen is playing its fourth consecutive season in the Swiss top division. The club has always focused on making a team of local players.

The Swiss federation, in a statement released on Friday, December 17, acknowledged this decision and announced that there will be no relegation in 2026. The federation will consider proposals from SWHL B teams wishing to join the PFWL.

Two years after Lugano, another club is set to withdraw from the Swiss top division.
