Swiss Ice Hockey has officially submitted a bid to host the Women's World Championships in 2028.

The only time Switzerland has hosted the Women's World Championships was in 2011 in Zurich/Winterthur. However, the Swiss Ice Hockey Association seems to have greater ambitions and hopes to capitalize on this event to create a boom in women's hockey, similar to what the Czech Republic achieved this year, which broke the attendance record for a Women's World Championship with 122,331 people.

The fact that the European Football Championship in Switzerland welcomed 657,300 spectators in July, a record attendance for this competition (and very good TV ratings) is also a trigger.

However, Switzerland could not be the only candidate. While Canada will host the 2027 Women's World Championship, Germany still hopes to host a men's and women's tournament in the same year, which could happen in 2028. Since 2023, the German federation has been experimenting with a mixed tournament, the Deutschland Cup, where men's and women's teams compete in the same venue. Both editions attracted over 20,000 spectators, and a third edition will be held in November in Landshut.

Finally, it's worth remembering that we still don't know where and when the 2026 Women's World Cup will take place, as the IIHF and PWHL have yet to agree on a slot.
