In front of a sold out crowd of 17,518 at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, the Toronto Sceptres earned a thrilling 3-2 overtime win against the Ottawa Charge. Daryl Watts electrified the Edmonton crowd taking a drop pass in the offensive zone before wrapping the net to beat Emerance Maschmeyer for the win. “This is such a cool experience for all of us. It’s not every day that you get to play in an NHL rink - especially this one, it’s so beautiful and the crowd was electric, so it’s hard not to get incredibly excited and pumped up to play in this atmosphere,” said Watts following the win. Ottawa opened the scoring in the game as Gabbie Hughes tallied on the power play. Late in the second however, Toronto scored back-to-back power play goals with Watts getting her team on the board first, followed by Julia Gosling scoring the second. For a Toronto team playing without Natalie Spooner and Sarah Nurse, the Sceptres managed to find the back of the net with the player advantage. “Our power play the last number of games – probably the last seven or eight – has been really hot," said Toronto head coach Troy Ryan. "We know also that if we work and compete hard 5-on-5 we will draw penalties, and that’s what maybe in the first period we were getting away from. Maybe not drawing the types of penalties we wanted. We knew that if we played the right way, we’d overextend some people to have to take penalties against us. Right now, the power play is confident, finding ways to contribute and they’ve done a great job.” Ottawa forward Tereza Vanišová tied the game with a power play goal of her iwn to send it to overtime, where Watts, a former Ottawa forward, sealed the win.
