The Anaheim Ducks have promoted Rick Paterson to general manager of the San Diego Gulls, the team announced Tuesday.
Paterson, who has been with the Ducks organization since 2005, held various positions with the team before his promotion.
Since joining the club, Paterson has served as the director of pro scouting three times (from 2005-06 to 2008-09, in 2020-21 and from 2022-23 to 2023-24). In between those stints, he also served as director of player personnel from 2009-10 to 2019-20 and as a pro scout in 2021-22.
A third-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1978 NHL Draft, Paterson played 430 games across nine seasons with the team, collecting 93 points. He also saw time in the AHL (with the New Brunswick Hawks and Nova Scotia Oilers) and IHL (Saginaw Hawks) throughout his playing career.
Since hanging up his skates in 1988, Paterson has been working in the NHL. He first served as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Penguins for five seasons, winning two Stanley Cups in the process.
After his time with the Penguins, he served as head coach of the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL for four seasons before making the jump to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
With the Lightning, he served as an assistant coach, interim head coach, pro scout and director of pro scouting across his eight seasons with the team before heading to the Ducks where he's been ever since.
With over 30 years of experience working in hockey, Paterson is a good candidate to try and lead the Gulls back to the playoffs for the first time since 2021-22.
