Whelan enjoyed a four-year pro career that saw him play in both the AHL and ECHL

Former Cleveland Monsters forward Alex Whelan announced his retirement this past week via social media.

A product of Ramsey, N.J., Whelan spent this past season splitting time between the Atlanta Gladiators (ECHL) and the Monsters. In 23 games with Atlanta, he scored 14 goals and added nine assists for 23 points. With Cleveland, Whelan collected 14 points in 36 regular season games.

Over the course of his four-year pro career, Whelan spent time with the Monsters, Gladiators, Hartford Wolf Pack and the Jacksonville Icemen (ECHL).

Prior to jumping into the pro game, Whelan spent four seasons playing for Quinnipiac (NCAA) where he put up 78 points in 141 career games.

In his Instagram post announcing his retirement, Whelan expressed his gratitude towards the game and said he is looking forward to the next chapter of his life.
