Former Tucson Roadrunners defenseman Steven Kampfer has retired from professional hockey, it was announced Saturday.

Kampfer, a 2007 fourth round pick of the Anaheim Ducks, spent this past season playing in the KHL for Traktor Chelyabinsk, scoring 10 goals and adding 22 assists for 32 points in 59 regular season games. With Traktor having made a deep run in the playoffs, Kampfer played a large role, collecting four goals and 10 points in 20 games.

Having turned pro at the end of the 2009-10 season, Kampfer went on to appear in 231 career NHL regular season games with the Boston Bruins, Minnesota Wild, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers. In that time, he put up 15 goals and 24 assists for 39 points.

Prior to heading to Providence to begin his pro career, Kampfer played his junior hockey with the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers as well as four years in the NCAA with the University of Michigan.

With Kampfer now hanging up the skates, he closes the book on a successful career as a pro. Capable of performing when called upon, Kampfer provided value to the teams he signed with and did a good job mentoring younger talent as his career went on.
