The Hershey Bears have been on a potentially historic pace, continuing their winning ways on Saturday with a 4-0 shutout of the Bridgeport Islanders. The club moved to 36-8-2 on the season, first place in the entire AHL with 74 points.
The victory gave Hershey its fifth straight home win, with Bears head coach Todd Nelson earning his 389th career head coaching victory in the AHL to move past former Hartford/Connecticut bench boss Ken Gernander (388) for sole possession of eighth on the AHL’s head coaching wins list.
Nelson, a former player with AHL, NHL and IHL experience, became the head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins in the summer of 2015 after coaching the Edmonton Oilers for 51 games in the 2014-15 season. Nelson and the Griffins would go on to win the Calder Cup with the club in 2016-17.
Nelson joined the Dallas Stars as an assistant coach from May 2018 to May of 2022, joining the Hershey Bears as head coach last season. He'd lead the squad to a 44-19-9 record and his second ever Calder Club as a head coach.
He is one of just three people ever to win the Calder Cup as a player, as an assistant coach, and as a head coach.
