The Seattle Kraken have assigned defenseman Ty Nelson to the Coachella Valley Firebirds, the team announced Sunday.
Nelson, who played this season with the North Bay Battalion (OHL), was drafted by the Kraken in the third round (68th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft.
While the Battalion made a deep run to the third round of the OHL playoffs, the Oshawa Generals (and injuries) proved to be too much, as they bowed out in seven games.
With the being said, the Kraken and Battalion have to be pleased with Nelson's play this past season, where he had 52 points in 54 games during the regular season and added 14 more in 16 playoff games.
Since being drafted first overall to the Battalion in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection, Nelson has scored 49 goals and added 130 assists for 179 points in 187 games.
As Nelson gets his first pro experience under his belt, Kraken brass will be paying close attention to one of their best prospects. Nelson has always been known for his ability to create offense and has put in the work on his defensive zone play but it will be interesting to watch how quickly he can adapt rigours of the pro game.
