One of the hottest goaltenders in the American Hockey League has just inked a new contract with the Washington Capitals
Clay Stevenson will stay in the Capitals system.
The 24-year-old goaltender today inked a new three-year 2.325 million dollar NHL contract with the Wahington Capitals. The contract's first year will act as a two-way deal, with the second and third years being one-way.
In 13 games with the league-leading Hershey Bears this season Stevenson has been rock-solid, posting a 9-4 record, leading all rookie goaltenders with wins, and owning the AHL's best goals-against average at 1.70. He ranks second in the league's save percentage with .934, leading the league with four shutouts and winning five of his last six starts. In that span, he's allowed just eight goals against.
Stevenson split the 2022-23 season between the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays and the Bears of the AHL. In the E Stevenson put up a 19-12-4 record with a 2.54 GAA and .916 save percentage. In three games in the AHL, he went 3-0 with a 1.96 GAA and .934 save percentage.
Signing a two-year, entry-level contract with the Capitals as an undrafted free agent in the spring of 2022, the Alberta native played 23 games for Dartmouth College before turning pro, holding a respectable 2.70 GAA and .922 SP despite a losing 6-14-2 record.
Stevenson, splitting time with Calder Cup MVP Hunter Shepard, is seen as a valuable asset in the goaltending pen for the Caps, and could find himself earning an NHL start pending fatigue, injury, or poor production from the tandem of Darcy Kuemper and Charlie Lindgren.
