    Matthew Phillips' reunion with the Capitals highlights a busy day on waivers with American League implications.

    The waiver wire was busy ahead of the trade deadline on Friday in the NHL.

    Matthew Phillips, 25, a sixth-round draft selection of the Calgary Flames in 2016, has been claimed off waivers by the Washington Capitals from the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the Caps assigned him to their AHL affiliate in Hershey.

    Phillips, who spent considerable time in the AHL with Calgary's affiliates in Stockton and Calgary, played 27 games with the Capitals this season before being acquired off waivers by the Penguins, where he played three games before being waived yesterday. 

    With the Heat in 2021-22, Phillips posted 68 points (31g, 37a) in 65 games, leading the club in goals and assists. In 265 career AHL games, Phillips has registered 237 points (103g, 134a), being was also named to the 2020 AHL All-Star Classic but was unavailable for the event.

    Elsewhere, the Calgary Flames have claimed blueliner Joel Hanley off waivers from the Dallas Stars. The 32-year-old spent parts of seven seasons in the AHL with the Portland Pirates, St. John's IceCaps, Tucson Roadrunners and Texas Stars.

    Aaron Dell, fresh off a new contract with the Los Angeles Kings, cleared waivers and was assigned to their affiliate in Ontario. Dell, 34, played five games for the Reign this season, putting up a shutout and two wins with a 2.63 GAA and .906SP. He previously suited up in the AHL for San Jose, Binghamton, Rochester, Worcester and Abbotsford. 

    Several notable names were put on waivers today and could find their way to the AHL if not claimed. This list includes newly signed Hurricanes forward Max Comtois, veteran center Sam Gagner (Edmonton), Vinni Lettieri (Minnesota), Jacob Lucchini (Minnesota) and Guillaume Brisebois (Vancouver)
