Bonino and the Rangers agreed to terminate the veteran's contract after he cleared waivers and opted not to report to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack.
On Tuesday, Stanley Cup-winning veteran forward Nick Bonino and the New York Rangers parted ways after the Rangers placed Bonino on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract.
The Athletic's Peter Baugh shared that the Rangers gave Bonino the All-Star Break to think things over after he cleared waivers. He decided he didn't want to report to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack and asked the Rangers to terminate his contract. The team, which has a lot of respect for him, honored that request.
TSN's Chris Johnson added that he expects Bonino to consider other NHL options once his contract is formally terminated, adding that "there have been inquiries," and noting that Bonino would need to sign with another club by 3 p.m. ET on March 8 to remain eligible for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
A versatile forward, proven shot blocker and reliable locker-room leader, Bonino could be a strong bottom-six option for a playoff rental.
The 35-year-old had five points in 45 games with the Rangers, coming off a 2022-23 campaign where he split time between the San Jose Sharks and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The 2007 draft selection of the Sharks has suited up for the Sharks, Penguins, Rangers, Ducks, Canucks, Wild and Predators, and has amassed 67 points in 69 AHL games with the Syracuse Crunch.
