The Henderson Silver Knights have signed defenseman Samuel Mayer to a two-year contract, the team announced Thursday.
A product of L'Orignal, Ont., Mayer split this past season between the Peterborough Petes and the Ottawa 67's. In 37 games with the Petes, Mayer had 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points before being traded to the 67's at the trade deadline.
After joining Ottawa, Mayer had 24 points in 32 regular season games before putting up four goals and 11 points in 10 playoff games.
Drafted by the Petes 15th overall in the 2020 OHL U18 Priority Selection, Mayer is one of the most successful players to come out of the U18 Draft since it started in 2017.
Over the course of his three seasons in the OHL, Mayer had 41 goals and added 97 assists for 138 points in 205 games from the backend.
As Mayer turns pro, the Silver Knights are getting a smart, puck-moving defender who can hold his own in the defensive zone as well. He uses his frame to make it difficult to beat him around the net and looks to activate into the rush when the opportunity presents itself.
