The Rochester Americans are close to hiring Mike Leone to be their next head coach, Brad Elliott Schlossman reported Wednesday.
A native of Dearborn, MI., Leone has spent the past two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) as their head coach and GM.
After finishing his playing career in 2016-17, Leone got his coaching start as an assistant coach with the Quad City Mallards (ECHL) in 2017-18.
After one year with the Mallards, Leone joined Bowling Green (NCAA) as an assistant coach for the 2018-19 season.
With two quick stops to start his coaching career, Leone would then join the U.S. NTDP where he served as an assistant coach for the U17 and U18 national teams between 2019-2022.
With former Rochester Americans head coach Seth Appert joining the Buffalo Sabres as an assistant coach, Leone will now get the opportunity to lead the Americans and try to sustain the success they have been able to generate.
Having impressed at every level he has coached at so far, Leone could very well be a head coaching candidate in the NHL down the line.
