Texas Stars forward Justin Hryckowian has been awarded the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award, it was announced by the AHL Thursday.
The award, voted on by media, coaches and players, is awarded every year to the AHL's most outstanding rookie.
A native of L'Île-Bizard, Que., Hryckowian just wrapped up his first full season of pro hockey, splitting time between Texas and the Dallas Stars. Over five NHL games, he collected an assist while putting up 22 goals and 38 assists for 60 points in 67 AHL games. His numbers with Texas put him in first place amongst rookies in points while also never going more than three consecutive games without a point.
Prior to making the jump to the Stars organization, Hryckowian spent three seasons in the NCAA with Northeastern, putting up 35 goals and 66 assists for 101 points in 94 career games.
With Hryckowian signed through next season, he could very well challenge for a spot on the Stars next year. A solid two-way player, he has shown his value in his rookie season and has what is required to stick in a depth role with Dallas now and in the future.
