The Hockey News looks back on the top five point-getters from 2022-23 in the AHL and checks in on where they're playing in 2023-24.

A breakout season in the American Hockey League can set the stage for the rest of a young player's career or help turn the tide for a would-be prospect or grizzled veteran trying to find their way.

The Hockey News looks back at the top point-producers from the 2022-23 AHL season and checks in on where they're playing in 2023-24.

Michael Carcone - 85 Points

2022-23 Team - Tucson Roadrunners (AHL)

2023-24 Team - Arizona Coyotes (NHL)

If there was any doubt that Ajax, Ontario's Michael Carcone was ready for the ranks of the NHL, he all but shattered them with his league-leading AHL performance last year.

Carcone, who suited up for Arizona for 30 games between 2021-22 and 22-23, put up 85 points with Tucson last year, including a career-high 31 goals.

For his efforts, Carcone has been promoted to the Coyotes, finding himself manning the third line more often than not, opposite Lawson Crouse and veteran Nick Bjustad.

Alex Barre-Boulet - 84 Points

2022-23 Team - Syracuse Crunch (AHL)

2023-24 Team - Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL)

Alex Barre-Boulet's professional career has been one filled with ups and downs, figuratively and literally.

Undrafted yet undeterred, Barre-Boulet has earned every inch of the ice he's played on.

Spending the bulk of his pro career with the Bolts AHL affiliate in Syracuse, Barre-Boulet put together a healthy campaign in 22-23 with 84 points in 69 games, including nine points in five games of the Calder Cup playoffs.

He currently finds himself flanking the likes of Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov, and Steven Stamkos on Tampa Bay's top lines and occupying space on the secondary power-play unit.

Persistence, for some, pays off.

T.J. Tynan - 81 Points

2022-23 Team - Ontario Reign (AHL)

2023-24 Team - Ontario Reign (AHL)

A third-round pick by the Blue Jackets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, T.J. Tynan has paid his dues, suiting up for the Falcons, Monsters, Wolves, Eagles, and most recently the Ontario Reign, a team that has seen him reach his highest threshold of pro-success.

Following up a breakout 98-point campaign with the Kings affiliate in 2021-22, Tynan propped up a solid 81 points across 72 games with the Reign.

He'll look to replicate that success for a third straight year in Ontario.

Chris Terry - 78 Points

2022-23 Team - Bridgeport Islanders (AHL)

2023-24 Team - Chicago Wolves (AHL)

A former leading scorer in his own right, Chris Terry put together a healthy production with the Bridgeport Islanders in 2022-23, locking down 78 points through 67 games.

The fifth-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes has banked 38 points through 152 NHL games with the Hurricanes and Canadiens, yet it's the AHL where he's found his scoring touch.

He most recently signed a one-year contract with the independent Chicago Wolves this past summer, earning three points in four games to start the 23-24 season.

Matthew Phillips Matthew Phillips

Matthew Phillips - 76 Points

2022-23 Team - Calgary Wranglers (AHL)

2023-24 Team - Washington Capitals (NHL)

A 76-point campaign in 66 games with the Calgary Wranglers has earned sixth-round draft selection Matthew Phillips a chance to play alongside one of the greatest shooters of a generation.

Phillips, who spent considerable time between the Calgary Flames, Stockton Hwat, and Calgary Wranglers, signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Washington Capitals in the off-season, where you can currently find him setting up the one and only Alex Ovechkin.

As of press time, Phillips has logged three points in four games with the Caps.
