The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have signed defenseman Mats Lindgren to a one-year deal, the team announced Friday.
Lindgren, a product of North Vancouver, B.C., spent this past season playing for the Red Deer Rebels (WHL) where he scored seven goals and added 34 assists for 41 points in 63 regular season games. Lindgren also played in nine playoff games with the Rebels, collecting five points.
Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Draft, Lindgren never signed with the Sabres and became a free agent this past June 1. Having now inked with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Lindgren foregoes his final season of junior eligibility to turn pro.
As Lindgren joins the Penguins, he will be another young defenseman that will see AHL time with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this upcoming season. With the Penguins' prospect pool lacking in many areas, taking shots on players such as Lindgren is not a bad bet.
