Blomqvist posted 23 saves for his first AHL shutout in 37 games.

It took parts of three seasons and 37 games, but Joel Blomqvist has his first American Hockey League shutout.

The highly touted 22-year-old goaltending prospect for the Pittsburgh Penguins blanked the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Wednesday, stopping all 23 shots as Wilkes Barre/Scranton put up plenty of run support as the B-Pens topped the Phantoms 3-0.

Blomqvist, a second overall draft selection of the Pens in 2020, has been outstanding this season in his first full pro season in North America. The Finn has gone 18-9-5 with a 2.12 and .920 SP in 35 games. He previously suited up for one game in the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons respectively, for the AHL's Penguins.

He spent most of his formative years with Karpat of SM-liiga, where he held a sturdy 2.29 GAA in 21 games played in the 2022-23 season.

Overall Blomqvist has put up an outstanding 2.17 GAA and .918 SP in 37 AHL games.
