The 23-year-old Florida product is expected to be back for the start of next season and will be placed on New Jersey's long-term injury reserve in the meantime.

The injury is a sizeable hit to a Devils team that is third-place in the Metropolitan Division with a 33-24-6 record and had Stanley Cup aspirations. The Devils were listed as Stanley Cup favourites multiple times this season but the Hughes loss will see their odds drop significantly.

New Jersey is now listed at +1700 to win the Stanley Cup and have an over/under set at 96.5 regular season points with +110 odds on Bet365.
