Whispers of blockbuster trades are part of every NHL offseason, but when Mitch Marner's name is mentioned, those whispers become roars.

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Vegas Golden Knights may have discussed a potential trade involving Marner last summer.

While nothing was confirmed, and no deal materialized, the mere suggestion of such a high-profile move has reignited speculation as this offseason heats up and brought the betting world into the conversation.

“I do believe on some level last year that the Maple Leafs and Vegas talked about a trade,” Friedman said during the most recent episode of his podcast 32 Thoughts. “This was last summer at some point. I think Vegas was interested in Marner, Toronto talked to them, but nobody ever confirmed it.”

The rumor, as tantalizing as it is, didn't gain traction according to Friedman for two reported reasons: First, the Leafs were reportedly interested in acquiring top-pairing defenceman Shea Theodore, but Vegas was unwilling to move him. Second, there was no guarantee at the time that Marner would agree to an extension.

As the offseason approaches, don't be surprised if sportsbooks begin releasing betting odds for where Mitch Marner might land next. It's not uncommon in today's NHL landscape for oddsmakers to post prop bets on major player movement especially when a name as big as Marner’s is involved.

If betting markets open on Marner’s next destination, expect the Vegas Golden Knights to be among the early favorites.

The fit makes sense as Vegas has a reputation for being aggressive and opportunistic in trades and big-name free agent signings. They could veru easily see a massive opportunity to get a star like Marner and keep their championship window open.

Of course, a lot remains uncertain. Toronto still has time to negotiate with Marner and try to retain him but the general consensus among the media is that a return isn't likely.

For now, it’s all speculation. But in the NHL, where smoke often leads to fire, the possibility of a Marner move and a bet on his next destination may soon become a storyline that dominates the summer.
