2026 projected first overall pick Gavin McKenna commits via social media to Pennsylvania State University.

The junior hockey landscape has undergone a seismic shift with the recent announcement that CHL players are now eligible to transition from Canadian major junior leagues to NCAA hockey in the United States. Long viewed as mutually exclusive development paths, the CHL and NCAA are now directly competing for top-tier talent for the first time in decades.

This groundbreaking rule change has ignited a flurry of speculation and debate across hockey media. Analysts and insiders are already naming big-time CHL stars who could make the jump to college hockey and perhaps none bigger than Gavin McKenna.

A few months following the rule being implemented, news broke that Penn State University is set to land McKenna, the projected first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The 17-year-old phenom from Whitehorse, Yukon, is garnering so much attention from the hockey world that many GMs throughout the NHL have reportedly refused the idea of trading their first-round pick next season as they don't want to miss out on the biggest prospect in the sport since Edmonton's Connor McDavid.

McKenna has become a human highlight reel — dazzling with jaw-dropping skill, elite skating, and next-level hockey IQ. With 41 goals and 88 assists for 129 points in just 56 games this past season, many scouts and analysts believe he's simply outgrown the WHL. A move to the NCAA would not only offer a tougher level of competition but also provide greater exposure and financial opportunities.

Penn State makes perfect sense as a landing spot as it's not only one of the premier athletic programs in the NCAA, but its strong hockey culture and competitive Big Ten environment offer McKenna the ideal stepping stone to the NHL.

Add in the recent changes to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies, and McKenna stands to earn significant income while playing collegiate hockey reportedly more than he would at any other school. This move is more than just headline news, it could be a game-changer for the entire college hockey landscape.

With McKenna joining the Nittany Lions, Penn State immediately becomes one of if not the top national title contender. For those looking to stay ahead of the curve, now might be the time to place a future bet on Penn State’s NCAA championship odds before they’re adjusted to reflect McKenna’s impact. Expect those odds to be released soon and when they are, the Nittany Lions could offer some serious value.
