Auston Matthews' hockey card values rising significantly after back-to-back hat tricks to begin the season.

The hockey card market performs similarly to stocks. Like companies on the TSX or the NYSE, hockey card values yo-yo up and down based on the performance of the entity you hold your investment. This means when a player performs well, typically it’ll lead to increased value.

This was the case in the opening week of the NHL season with Auston Matthews after he recorded not one, but two hat tricks to begin his season.

Over the course of the last two weeks, Matthews’ Young Guns market has increased by a whopping 25 percent. On average, that’s the highest increase of any other card in the hobby.

According to Cardladder.com, a top-graded PSA 10 Matthews Young Guns was purchased online for as low as $928 Canadian dollars ($628 USD) on October 5th. Two hat tricks later that same card is now selling well north of $1000 with the last sale being $1,321 Canadian ($969 USD). That’s a profit of $393 in just a couple of weeks. If you purchased a BGS 9.5 graded slab, you’ve seen that investment grow even larger with 38% gains over the last two-week stretch with the last one selling at $940 CAD ($689 USD).

Usually, this is the time to take the profits and sell. However, with a guy like Matthews, there is a chance for more growth in the card. After all, nobody wants to be that person who sold BitCoin at $1000.

There is a history of this card performing extremely well. When Matthews was in the midst of his 60-goal MVP campaign, his PSA 10 Young Guns had a record sale of $3,683 CAD ($2,700 USD) on May 11th, 2022.

Now, the market overall is down significantly since that time. Plus, that did seem to be a one-off price with most sales in the $2K USD range, which equates to roughly $2700 Canadian. So I wouldn’t expect the card to return to that price anytime soon, but It certainly still has room to grow if you believe he’s in for another monstrous season.

The hockey card stock market is a fun game to play. But remember the fundamentals: buy low, sell high— and Matthews’ value is very, very high right now.
