The Kansas City Mavericks and Toledo Walleye resume their series for Game 3 of the ECHL Western Conference Finals on Monday night. Here is a look at five things to know.
The Kansas City Mavericks will look to take a 3-0 series lead on Monday in Game 3 of the ECHL Western Conference Finals, while the Toledo Walleye will look to salvage a win at home.
Jacob Hayhurst broke a 2-2 tie late in the third period to lift the Mavericks to a win in Game 1 of the series. The following night, Kansas City scored five unanswered goals to take Game 2 by a 5-1 final score.
Here are five things to know ahead of Monday's Game 3:
McKenna Madness
After a relatively quiet series against Tulsa in the first round, Mavericks' Jeremy McKenna has made a ton of noise as the stakes have gotten higher. The Kansas City forward is riding a six-game point streak into Monday's game, collecting four goals and six assists during that stretch, including a four-point night in Game 2 against Toledo.
Sawchuk Delivers
Despite seeing his four-game goal streak end in Game 2, Toledo's Riley Sawchuk has been one of the top performers in the Kelly Cup Playoffs thus far. The Walleye rookie leads all skaters with eight goals, with five of those coming in the last five games.
Road Warriors
Kansas City has been dynamite away from Cable Dahmer Arena in the playoffs thus far, going a perfect 7-0. The Mavericks have outscored their opponents 29-16 on the road, including 8-3 in the two games against Toledo.
Walleye Woes
The Walleye saw their historic 22-game win streak end on Friday night in a 3-2 loss in Game 1. Toledo followed with another loss in Game 2, marking the first time that they have lost consecutive games since March 13. Oddly enough, the Walleye's win streak began after that, which perhaps bodes well for Game 3.
Shot Savers
Despite dropping the first two games of the series, it's certainly not for a lack of effort. Toledo has averaged 36.60 shots per game, which ranks third among playoff teams. However, Kansas City's dynamic duo in net have risen to the challenge. Cale Morris and Jack LaFontaine have stopped a combined 63 of 66 shots (0.955 SV%) through the first two games.
Game 3 will get underway from Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio, on Monday, with puck drop set for 7:15 p.m. EST.
