Saturday was Wizard Night at Fishers Event Center, and the Indy Fuel showed off some magic in front of a sellout crowd of 6,564 with a 3-2 overtime win over the Kansas City Mavericks.
Kyle Maksimovich scored a power-play goal, his second tally on the night, to win it in the extra frame.
The Fuel also collected over 7,800 socks to donate to homeless shelters around the city.
Maksimovich bookended his two goals, scoring the first at 4:36 of the opening frame. Lucas Brenton and Ty Farmer each earned assists, and then the socks flew.
After the Mavericks’ Jake McLaughlin took a high sticking double-minor penalty, Kevin Lombardi took advantage at the 9:42 mark for a 2-0 Fuel lead.
Kansas City then went on the power-play, and the club’s leading scorer, Cade Borchardt, scored at 15:58 to pull the Mavericks within a goal.
The Fuel outshot the Mavericks 7-1 in the second period, but neither team could light the lamp.
Luke Loheit tied the game for the Mavericks 2-2 at the 9:18 mark of the third period.
After Kansas City’s Max Andreev went to the sin bin for tripping at 4:32 of overtime, Maksimovich completed his bookend on the 4-on-3 advantage to seal the 3-2 win.
Alex Wideman and Bryan Lemos picked up assists on the play.
The win snapped the Mavericks’ six-game winning streak, although they remain in the Mountain Division’s top spot.
