For the fourth time in franchise history, the Kalamazoo Wings are 4-0 after Friday's victory.

The Kalamazoo Wings’ 50th anniversary season is off to a flying start. For the fourth time in franchise history, the K-Wings are 4-0 to start a season after taking down the Indy Fuel 2-0 Friday night.

It was the first time since the 2009-10 season the K-Wings started the season with a 4-0 mark. Outstanding defense and special teams, combined with the stellar goaltending of Jonathan Lemieux, proved too much for the Fuel, who drop to 1-4-0.

The game was scoreless until the 15:15 mark of the second period, when Ayden MacDonald broke through on the power-play for a 1-0 lead.

Zach Okabe sent a feed to Josh Bloom crashing through the left side, who found MacDonald for a one-timer from the left hash mark.

Kalamazoo came into the game 4-for-11 (36.4%) on the power-play, best in the ECHL.

MacDonald’s goal proved to be the only one the Wings would need, but Bloom then added a goal on a breakaway with the K-Wings down two men (5-on-3) at the 3:02 mark of the third period for a 2-0 lead.

Meanwhile, Lemieux made 28 saves, getting some help from Philip Beaulieu, who knocked away a Bryan Lemos breakaway shot on a second period shorthanded opportunity for Indy.

Lemieux is now 3-0-0 and recorded his first shutout of the season.

Indy came into Friday’s contest second in the league with 22.50 shots-against per game; Kalamazoo totaled 26, but the two goals proved to be enough.

The Fuel and Wings will meet again Saturday night at 7:00 Pm ET.
