The Maine Mariners continued their dominance over the Reading Royals on Saturday with a 3-2 road win. It was the fourth win in as many games for the Mariners against Reading this season.
Jimmy Lambert was stellar with his second consecutive three-point game for the Mariners, who picked up their first road win of the young ECHL season.
Maine took advantage of two power-play chances with two goals in the first period. Lambert got the scoring started with a wrist shot from the right circle at the 7:48 mark of the first period for a 1-0 Mariners lead.
Matt Brown tied the game for Reading at 9:33, but the Mariners went right back to work with their second power-play tally. Patrick Guay set up in the low slot and fired a snap shot past Vinnie Purpura at 16:10. The score remained 2-1 Mariners as the two teams headed to the first intermission.
It took until 14:16 of the second period for Brooklyn Kalmikov to extend Maine’s lead to 3-1. After taking a deflected backhander from Lambert, Kalmikov slipped the puck into the open net. Kalmikov came into the game with three goals and five points against Reading.
Sawyer Boulton got the Royals back in the game just 25 seconds later, cutting the deficit to 3-2 when a shot in the slot bounced off his back and got past Mariners goalie Nolan Maier.
The rest of the game remained scoreless, while Maier stopped 25 of 27 shots he faced to dethrone his former team for the second time this season. Purpura saved 22 of 25 shots but suffered the loss.
Maine improves to 6-8-0, while the Royals drop their record to 6-10-3.
