After spending the past several seasons in the Anaheim Ducks organization, Brett Ferguson is taking his coaching experience to the ECHL.
Ferguson, an Iowa native, was hired by the Allen Americans as assistant coach, the club announced. He previously served as Anaheim's assistant coach/video coach, but is excited to be back behind the bench.
"My family and I are very grateful to join the Allen Americans organization," Ferguson said following the announcement. "I would like to thank B.J. Adams for the opportunity to serve as his assistant coach, and ownership for their commitment to our team's success. After five years as Anaheim's video coach, I am looking forward to getting back behind the bench and to help guide the Americans to success. Our family has already fallen in love with the area, and we are excited about the Americans commitment to the community."
Ferguson earned a bachelor's degree in history from the University of South Carolina Aiken in 2009. He was a three-time Iowa High School State Champion as a member of the Des Moines Capitals.
The Ferguson family is no stranger to the ECHL. Brett's father, Bob, is a two-time John Brophy Award winner as ECHL Coach of the Year. He captured the honor in consecutive seasons with the Florida Everblades from 1998 to 2000 and never missed the playoffs in 25 years as a head coach.
Brett and his new team are preparing for training camp in October. The Americans also announced a couple of schedule changes. Their lone preseason contest on October 11 against the Tulsa Oilers has been moved from CUTX Event Center Community Rink to NYTEX Sports Center in Tarrant County due to ice availability in Allen. The club also announced a schedule change for the game against the Wichita Thunder on October 30 from 10:30 Am CT to 7:10 Pm.
