The Bloomington Bison (1-2-0-1) used a furious three-goal third period to force overtime but ultimately fell in a shootout to the Iowa Heartlanders (1-2-1-0) on Saturday night.
Four different skaters found the back of the night for Bloomington, including forward Danny Katic, who recorded a pair of goals in Thursday's game.
Forwards Chongmin Lee and defensemen Ryan Siedem and Case McCarthy also lit the lamp to round out the Bison's scoring.
Meanwhile, netminder Hugo Ollas made his first start of the 2024-25 season. The Swedish netminder allowed three goals on nine shots before he was lifted in relief. Mark Sinclair, who took over past the midway point of the second period, turned aside 12-of-13.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead 41 seconds into the game on Dakota Raabe's tally and doubled their lead less than two minutes later.
Bloomington pulled within a goal on Katic's third of the season on a backdoor tap-in from Sahil Panwar.
Despite holding a 9-8 shots-on-goal advantage, the Bison trailed 2-1 after the first 20 minutes of play.
The Heartlanders, who registered just three shots on goal, scored twice in the second period to extend their lead 4-1.
Matthew Sop and Will Calverley accounted for the goals, bookending extracurriculars that resulted in Iowa's Brandon Yeamans and Bloomington's Jackson Leppard being ejected on a pair of game misconducts.
McCarthy brought the Bison back within two goals 18 seconds into the third period. Just over four minutes later, Lee made it a one-goal game. With under two minutes left in regulation, Siedem went five-hole on Iowa netminder William Rousseau to tie the game at 4-4.
In the shootout, the Heartlanders got goals from Sop and Jack O'Brien.
Bloomington and Iowa will wrap up their three-game series in Coralville, Iowa, on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, with puck drop set for 7:00 p.m. CST.
