With two decades of international experience, Mitch Giguere arrives in Greensboro to forge a family-first foundation rooted in player development, elite recruitment, and unwavering community trust.
Greensboro Gargoyles open a new chapter in their young history. On Monday, June 15th, they announced they have hired Mitch Giguere as the second head coach in franchise history.
Giguere comes to Greensboro with almost two decades of coaching experience. He has a reputation for developing players and building those relationships, along with having a winning culture in the locker room. This opportunity represents more than a promotion for Giguere. This gives a chance for the franchise to establish a steady foundation for players and fans alike.
Giguere is going to Greensboro after spending the last three seasons as the Assistant Coach with the Wheeling Nailers. He played a significant role in player recruitment, development, and the family environment in Wheeling. He worked closely with all players, looking to help them head up to the next level while keeping them accountable and helping them grow as players.
Giguere’s coaching journey has taken him internationally, with stops in junior hockey, professional hockey, and within international leagues. The stops he made were in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), Québec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), Western Hockey League (WHL), and Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL). He has earned respect and has the ability connect with players. Those qualities are going to prove critical for a young franchise like Greensboro.
Beyond the locker room, Giguere spoke on creating an atmosphere where trust and value are at the core. He also does well at connecting with the team and their supporters. His vision extends beyond the locker room. “I have great excitement to rejuvenate the culture of Greensboro Hockey. I have spoken with former Monarchs and am ready to make the Gargoyles a team fans who come to the rink and identify themselves with and players are proud to represent on and off the ice. I look forward to building a space where players want to be coached and feel they are trusted and believed in. Coming from a big family, with four kids and a wife, we want to build one big family between the players, coaches, and fans. There is a strong core here, now we focus on adding the next pieces.”- Greensboro Gargoyles Press Release
Being within the Carolina Hurricanes organization gives the AHL Team- Chicago Wolves, and now Greensboro, untapped access to the prospects to help encourage the development of their skills for the next level. Giguere’s in-depth background can help foster player development while they make their stop in Greensboro.
As the 2026-2027 season approaches rapidly, ECHL Head Coaches are now facing the challenges of building rosters and meeting expectations while working with young teams in their second season. While the road ahead will not be easy, the Gargoyles have found the right person to lead the way in their young history.
