Walleye lead the charge as Fort Wayne clinches, Indy battles, and Kalamazoo/Cincinnati fight for the last ticket to the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
With the regular season dwindling to single-digit games left for every team within the ECHL, the Central Division playoff race is going to be the most competitive division for playoff spots in the league. The top four teams in each division punch a ticket to the Kelly Cup Playoffs, which means every point is critical down the last stretch of games.
Toledo Setting the Pace
The Toledo Walleye have spent most of the season near the top of the Central Division standings. They remain one of the most consistent teams in the Western Conference and are once again positioning themselves as a favorite to win the division heading into the playoffs.
They have a balanced offense, strong defense, and goaltending has kept them ahead of their divisional foes, and Toledo looks to secure home-ice advantage in the first round if they can maintain their position in the final games of the season.
Fort Wayne and Indy Battling for Position
Looking over to other teams in the central, Fort Wayne Komets and Indy Fuel have been locked in a tight battle for playoff spots behind Toledo. Fort Wayne has clinched their playoff spot, and Indy is in the fight for its. Fort Wayne has been on a strong run late in the season, climbing into the top three in the division standings, while Indy has remained in the playoff picture but is likely to battle until the very last game of the season.
This race for second and third place is important because those spots determine who has home-ice advantage in the opening round, where the second-place team faces the third-place team in the division semifinals.
Kalamazoo and Cincinnati are fighting for the Final Spot

The Kalamazoo Wings and Cincinnati Cyclones have been battling for that final position, with both teams picking up key points in recent weeks to stay in the race. Over this past weekend, facing an out-of-division opponent, Kalamazoo picked up six necessary points to help their playoff push when they swept the Adirondack Thunder of the North Division. Those six points could play a major factor in where they place in the playoffs.
Iowa Trying to Stay Alive
With the latest announcement of the Iowa Heartlanders suspending operations for the 2026-2027 season, the Heartlanders remain on the outside looking in but are still alive, mathematically. They will need a strong run in their final games and help from other teams to move into a playoff position.
Why the Race Matters
The Central Division has been one of the most competitive divisions in the ECHL over the past several seasons, and playoff positioning is crucial. Hockey people know that seeding determines matchups, but it also determines what team gets home-ice advantage. Home ice is a major factor in the ECHL, where travel and quick playoff turnarounds can play a big role.
If the standings hold, the first round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs in the Central Division, and the rest of the divisions, would feature:
- First versus Fourth
- Second versus Third
And given how tight the standings are, especially within the Central, those matchups could change right down to the final games of the regular season.
Final Stretch
With minimal games remaining, every game in the Central Division playoff race has playoff implications. The Toledo Walleye and Fort Wayne Komets have punched their tickets to the playoffs. Indy Fuel, Kalamazoo Wings, Cincinnati Cyclones, and Iowa Heartlanders are all still battling for a playoff berth.
The Central Division race is far from over, and it’s looking likely that the battle will come down to the final games of the regular season.
