The Kansas City Mavericks are one win away from the franchise's first-ever Kelly Cup Finals appearance
Cole Coskey scored at the 11:30 mark of overtime to lift the Kansas City Mavericks to a 2-1 final score against the Toledo Walleye in Game 4 of the ECHL Western Conference Finals on Friday night. With the win, Kansas City takes a 3-1 series lead and can clinch their spot in the franchise's first-ever Kelly Cup Finals on Saturday night.
Mavericks goaltender Jack LaFontaine earned his fifth win of the playoffs, turning aside 36 of 37 shots on goal, including all eight in the extra session. Toledo, who recently saw its historic 22-game win streak end, suffered its first road loss since March 13 at South Carolina.
After two scoreless periods, the Walleye opened the scoring with under seven minutes left in regulation on Matt Anderson's second postseason goal. Brandon Hawkins, who was injured late in Monday's Game 3, was back in Toledo's lineup on Friday, and his wrist shot from above the left-wing circle was redirected by Anderson and into the Kansas City net.
However, the lead would be short-lived as the Mavericks tied the game just 84 seconds later on Jake Jaremko's third goal of the playoffs and first since Game 4 of the Mountain Division Finals against Idaho.
David Cotton's initial one-timer from the slot was stopped by Toledo goaltender John Lethemon, who made 25 saves on Friday, but Jaremko cleaned up the rebound to the left of the cage.
Kansas City registered just one shot on goal in the overtime session, but the Mavericks made it count.
Jaremko's centering feed found the stick of Coskey alone in front, and the Kansas City forward redirected the puck into the back of the net, sending Cable Dahmer Arena into a frenzy. The Mavericks will look to wrap up the series on home ice in Game 5 on Saturday, with puck drop set for 7:05 p.m. CST.
