Following opening week across the league, the ECHL has named Jackson Berezowski of the Newfoundland Growlers as the Inglasco ECHL Player of the Week for Oct. 19-22, with Garrett Metcalf of the Utah Grizzlies named the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Oct. 19-22. It is the second time in Metcalf's career that he has received the weekly honor.
Berezowski, who is under contract to Toronto of the American Hockey League, scored three goals - including a pair of game-winning tallies - and added four assists for seven points in three games against Reading during the opening weekend of the season.
The 21-year-old had the game-winning goal and added three assists in a 7-4 win on Friday, picked up an assist in a 4-1 victory on Saturday and scored both of the Growlers’ goals in a 2-1 overtime win on Sunday. Prior to turning pro, Berezowski recorded 232 points (130g-102a) in 273 career games with Everett of the Western Hockey League.
On behalf of Jackson Berezowski, a case of pucks will be donated to a Newfoundland youth hockey organization by Inglasco, the exclusive puck supplier of the ECHL. Since beginning its sponsorship of the award in 2000-01, Inglasco has donated more than 49,000 pucks to youth hockey organizations in ECHL cities.
Metcalf, who is under contract to Colorado of the American Hockey League, stopped all 35 shots he faced on Sunday in a 1-0 win over Tulsa to record the only shutout during the opening week of the ECHL season.
A native of Salt Lake City, Metcalf has appeared in 33 career games with Utah going 16-11-2 with one shutout, a 2.98 goals-against average and a save percentage of .908. He has posted a 3-5-1 record in nine American Hockey League appearances with San Diego and Lehigh Valley.
Prior to turning pro, Metcalf appeared in 56 career collegiate games with UMass-Lowell, Mercyhurst College and Long Island University.
