Two teams clinched spots, but the thrilling chase for seeding and that final playoff berth intensifies as the ECHL North Division season winds down.

As the regular season rapidly comes to an end, the ECHL’s North Division playoff race is entering its most pivotal stretch. While two teams have already secured their place in the postseason, positioning — and one final playoff spot — remain very much up for grabs.

The Wheeling Nailers and Maine Mariners have officially punched their ticket to the Kelly Cup Playoffs, but there is a bigger battle behind. It involves the Adirondack Thunder, Reading Royals, and Trois-Rivières, and it’s looking likely that it will go down to the final days of the season.

Wheeling and Maine Battle for Division Title

Wheeling has spent a majority of the season at the top, and under the helm of a new Head Coach, Ryan Papaioannou. For the Division Title, Wheeling can control its own destiny when it comes to grabbing it. Finishing first is significant. It’s not just for banners, but for playoff positioning. The division winner will face the fourth-place team in the first round, while the second-place team faces off against the third-place team.

The Maine Mariners have put together a strong season of their own and remain within striking distance of Wheeling for the top spot. Even if the Mariners don’t catch the Nailers, securing second place gives home ice advantage to the Mariners in the first round.

Adirondack vs Reading: The Most Important Race

The most intense battle in the North Division right now is between Adirondack and Reading for third place. The difference between finishing third and fourth is massive — third place likely means a first-round series against Maine, while fourth place would mean a matchup with Wheeling, one of the top teams in the league this season.

Both teams have traded positions throughout the second half of the season, and the race could very well come down to performances in the final games of the season. Adirondack has been trying to hold its position, while Reading has been nipping at its heels in the standings late.

Trois-Rivières Still Hanging On

The defending Kelly Cup Champion, Trois-Rivières Lions, remain mathematically alive in the playoff race, but they face quite a battle ahead. They would need a near-perfect finish combined with struggles from both Adirondack and Reading to move into the top four. While the odds are long, they aren’t out…yet.

The Rest of the Division

The Worcester Railers sit further back in the standings and are running out of time to close the gap. At this point in the season, every game becomes a must-win, and even then, those teams will need help from others to climb into a playoff position. The Norfolk Admirals and Greensboro Gargoyles are pretty much, mathematically, eliminated from playoff contention at this point. Norfolk had a stronger second half of the season, but the first half of the season was a struggle. Greensboro is a new team and is trying to find its identity, but the Kelly Cup Playoffs are not in its future this season.

Final Stretch Storylines to Watch

As the season comes to a close, fans have a few things to watch:

  • Wheeling is chasing its first division title since the 2003-2004 season
  • Maine is trying to overtake Wheeling for first place
  • Adirondack and Reading are battling for the playoffs and home ice

With only a few weeks left in the regular season, the North Division playoff picture is not fully set and will come down to the last regular-season games. The race for seeding will also be a battle in this division. The final countdown of games determines who goes home, who has some postseason play, and who can drive their team to the Cup.
