Offensive firepower combined with stellar defense and goaltending helped Kansas City to two shutout victories over the Americans.

In one of the most dominant performances of the young 2024-25 season, the Kansas City Mavericks swept a two-game series in Allen over the weekend, with both games ending in convincing shutouts.

On Friday, the Mavericks took down the Americans 4-0, with goaltender Victor Ostman stopping all 16 shots he faced for his first professional shutout.

Americans netminder Anson Thornton did his best to contain the Mavericks’ offensive aggressiveness, stopping 34 of 38 shots. Max Andreev got the scoring started late in the first period on his first goal of the season at 16:17 for a 1-0 lead.

The Mavericks outshot Allen 15-2 in the second period but couldn’t score. That changed in the third, when Cam Morrison found the back of the net at the 1:48 mark for a 2-0 lead.

At 15:07, Cade Borchardt netted his third tally of the season for a 3-0 advantage.

Jackson Berezowski capped off the scoring at 17:55 for the 4-0 final.

Kansas City was even more dominant on Saturday, cruising to a 9-0 victory, this time with Jack LaFontaine recording the shutout. The Mavericks had a whopping 51-18 advantage in shots on goal, sending wave after wave of chances past Allen netminders Dylan Wells and Thornton. Wells gave up six goals on 29 shots, while Thorton stopped 19 of 22.

Fans had barely settled into their seats when Andreev gave Kansas City a 1-0 lead just 16 seconds into the contest.

Morrison doubled the lead at 3:19, and Berezowski made the score 3-0 at the 6:10 mark.

The second period started like the first, with Berezowski picking up his second tally of the night 17 seconds into the frame.

Borchardt added his second at 3:01 and Morrison got another at the 8:12 mark for a commanding 6-0 lead.

Two more goals came in the period, with Pascal Laberge potting one at 13:24 and David Noel followed at 16:13.

Landon McCallum scored Kansas City’s final goal at 16:14 of the third period before the game mercilessly ended for the Americans.

Allen has typically played well against the Mavericks, who held a 24-22-4 advantage since 2021. But Kansas City has dominated recently, going 11-4 against the Americans last season.

The Mavericks are a perfect 4-0-0 to start the season, grabbing the early lead in the Mountain Division. Morrison, Borchardt and Andreev each have nine points, second-best in the ECHL.

This weekend, Kansas City will host the Fort Wayne Komets at Cable Dahmer Arena.
