A three-year partnership dissolves as Norfolk faces an uncertain future. The Admirals must now navigate roster construction and goaltending depth while scouting for a new NHL ally.

Offseason shuffle, as some would say, continues in the ECHL with the Norfolk Admirals and the Winnipeg Jets parting ways from their 3-year affiliation.

This move signals the beginning of a transition for Norfolk as they begin for he 2026-2027 season without an NHL club in place. Affiliations often happen behind the scenes, but the impact is felt throughout the course of a season, from roster construction to goaltending to development.

Winnipeg and Norfolk joined hands in 2023 and played an important role in the Jets' prospect development. Prospects who were assigned gained valuable experience in Norfolk, and some earned time with the Manitoba Moose. Norfolk benefited from the talent throughout the season. The affiliation provided stability during a time when NHL organizations have started to prioritize their farm teams.

For Norfolk, the challenge ahead is either finding a new NHL partner or preparing to operate independently until one is found. Several ECHL franchises have completed seasons independently without an NHL affiliate, but have relied more on veteran signings and future-consideration trades, along with relationships with AHL clubs, to add depth. The loss of an NHL affiliate can be especially significant when it comes to goaltending. NHL organizations assign prospects to gain ice time and starts while providing the ECHL team with depth throughout the season. Norfolk has been competitive in recent years.

The timing of the split adds another storyline to the offseason already filled with movement in the NHL and ECHL levels. Several ECHL clubs have experienced affiliation changes in recent years. Whether Norfolk announces a new NHL partner in the coming weeks or operates independently, it enters the important stretch of the off-season. The decisions made over the next few weeks will shape not only the roster but the 2026-2027 season.
