It’s been an eventful last six months for Scott Burt.
After taking a leave of absence from his duties as head coach and general manager of the Rapid City Rush to undergo treatment for a cancerous brain tumor, Burt returned to the team in February.
The Rush did not qualify for the 2025 Kelly Cup Playoffs. On Tuesday, the club announced Burt’s contract would not be renewed for the 2025-26 season.
Burt spent four seasons as the Rush’s Head Coach, adding on the General Manager tag following his first year. He compiled a record of 130-129-29.
Rapid City qualified for the 2022 Kelly Cup Playoffs under Burt’s direction.
“We would like to thank Coach Burt for his dedication to the Rush organization,” Rush President Jared Reid said in a statement. “We appreciate all his hard work over the last four seasons and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
The 2025-26 regular-season schedule is out. The Rush will play 36 home and 36 road games, the first of which is Friday, Oct. 17 on the road against the Kansas City Mavericks.
The search for the franchise’s fifth head coach will get underway immediately. For Burt, a new chapter also begins. Here’s hoping he continues in good health as he seeks his next opportunity.
