The Orlando Solar Bears forward was named ECHL Rookie of the Month Wednesday.

Spencer Kersten of the Orlando Solar Bears was selected as the Howies Hockey Tape ECHL Rookie of the Month for January, the league announced on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old right-shot winger recorded at least a point in 11 of the 12 games he played in January. He potted 11 goals and added six assists for 17 points during the month to go along with six multi-point games.

Kersten ended January on a nine-game point streak, scoring 14 points (9-5-14) over that span.

A native of Waterloo, Ont., Kersten is ranked first among ECHL rookies with 22 goals and is tied for fifth overall in the league with 46 points in 48 games this season. He has also skated in two games for Belleville of the American Hockey League.

Kersten made his pro hockey debut with the Solar Bears late last season, tallying six points (2-4-6) in 10 regular-season games. He added nine points (6-3-9) in 11 games during the 2024 Kelly Cup Playoffs.

Before turning pro, Kersten played his NCAA hockey at Princeton University and Bowling Green State University. He collected 58 points (24-34-58) in 129 collegiate games.

Kersten becomes just the second Solar Bear in team history to receive Rookie of the Month honors. Taylor Matson was the only other to earn the distinction after scoring eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in February of 2014.
