Discover how early mornings and unwavering passion forged Nick Canade’s relentless path to Boise, a journey built on grit, adaptability, and a deep love for the game.
For Idaho Steelheads forward Nick Canade, the journey to professional hockey didn’t begin under bright lights or in packed arenas—it started in the quiet, early hours of the morning.
“I think just at the young age, first getting into the game. The mornings going to the rink at five, six in the morning with my dad and kind of just falling in love with the game,” Canade recalled. “Him teaching me everything he knew. Sunday practices, when you're playing tyke and enjoying every second of it. I wanted to play the game for as long as I could.”
Those formative moments shaped not just his passion, but the foundation of a career built on persistence, adaptability, and appreciation for the game itself.
Unlike many players who can point to a defining moment when everything clicked, Canade’s rise was gradual and constructed day by day, shift by shift.
“I wouldn't say there was a specific turning point,” he said. “Once I got into the OHL, just kind of taking it day by day and enjoying every second of it. After my first few years, the opportunities came where I started to think I could play pro hockey. I did everything I could to take that step.”

“When I got to Idaho, the ambition was to further my career in North America, and they were so welcoming,” Canade said. “The city, the atmosphere, and the fans. I’ve been here for four years. It’s a very hard place to leave. I’ve really enjoyed every step of the way, and I definitely could make this a home in the future.”
Boise has embraced Canade just as much as he has embraced it. In a market without major professional sports competition, Steelheads hockey has become a centerpiece of the community.

I think we lead the league in most consecutive sellouts. We’ve sold out pretty much every game the last four years I’ve been here.”
That environment has helped fuel not only individual success, but a strong, unified locker room culture, something Canade believes is central to the team’s identity.
“It’s a very tight-knit group,” he explained. “We don’t have any egos. Everybody’s on the same page, everybody wants to play their role. We’ve tried to build a culture here in Boise, and I think we’ve done a really good job. I really think we have a group that can go on a very deep playoff run.”

“Obviously a smaller guy, I always lean towards the physical side of the game and try not to take anything from anyone,” he said. “The home crowd definitely sees me fight a lot in Boise. But the other side of my game is my speed and my ability to skate. I try to be a fast, hardworking hockey player and lead by example.”
That mentality, doing whatever it takes, has defined his professional career, now five years in. And with that experience comes perspective, especially for younger players chasing the same dream.

Gratitude is a recurring theme in Canade’s story, and no one embodies that more than the person who helped start it all—his father.
“My dad,” he said simply. “From the early mornings driving me to the rink, to coaching me through my minor hockey career, he’s always been someone I go to. Whether it’s about hockey or life, he’s been a huge support system. He’s a major reason why I am where I am today.”
As Canade continues to write his professional chapter in Boise, his definition of success remains grounded, not in stats or accolades, but in effort and fulfillment.
“I think just giving it everything I had,” he said. “If I can leave the game one day knowing I didn’t leave any opportunities out there, I’d be happy. I’ve gotten to see different places across the U.S., experience Europe. I’ve really enjoyed the whole journey. I wouldn’t change a second of it.”
From those early morning rink visits to a beloved presence in one of the ECHL’s most passionate markets, Nick Canade’s career is a testament to commitment, humility, and a genuine love for the game.
