The road is long to ECHL success.
The regular season, simply put, is a grind, and the playoffs aren't exactly a picnic.
Avoiding the pitfalls of rising and falling through the AA and AAA systems, finding all-star caliber players in the league to rack up points and become a cornerstone of a club has proven increasingly difficult in recent years.
To date, there are only three current ECHL players who have clocked in at over 500 points in the regular season and playoffs combined:
Shawn Szydlowski - Fort Wayne: 597 Points
Returning for his 10th season in the orange and black, Shawn Szydlowski stands alone as the points leader for all current ECHL players.
Szydlowski, 33, started his pro career playing two games with the Portland Pirates of the AHL in 2011. After stints in the ECHL with Gwinnett, and 45 games with the Central Hockey League’s Fort Worth Brahmas, he was assigned to Fort Wayne by Rochester of the AHL on October 23, 2013.
The 6’0 forward skated 476 regular season games with the Komets from 2013-2022.
Justin Taylor - Kalamazoo: 579 Points
Only 18 points behind, Kalamazoo Wings all-time leader in points Justin Taylor looks to continue his league dominance in 2023.
Taylor, 34, is a Mindemoya, ON native and is entering his 14th professional season (2010-present). The forward is Kalamazoo’s franchise leader in games played (685), goals (257), and points (498), donning the K-Wings crest in all but one season over that span.
Last season, Taylor led the team in goals (20), points scored (41), and finished No. 3 on the team in assists (21). The forward also finished 2022-23 ranked T-No. 7 in the ECHL for power-play goals scored.
Matt Register - Idaho: 540 Points In third place on our list is Idaho's Matt Register, one of the winningest players in league history. His 540 points across the regular season and playoffs are stellar, more so when you consider Register's totals come from the blue line.
Register, 33, enters his 13th professional season, second with Idaho, after finishing with 52 points (9G, 43A) in 68 games last season. In addition, he was named to the ECHL First All-Star Team for the sixth time in his career and was a co-winner for ECHL Plus Performer of the Year at +53.
Matt Register- Idaho Steelheads PhotoHis 43 assists led all Steelheads skaters and tied for first amongst all league defenders while his 52 points tied for second. In 15 contests in the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs last season he totaled 14 points (1G, 13A).
The 6-foot-2, 225lb blueliner defender captured three straight ECHL Kelly Cup Championships winning with the Colorado Eagles in 2018 and 2017 while earning his first league title with the Allen Americans in 2016.
During the 2017 playoffs the Calgary, AB native was named MVP of the playoffs leading all defensemen in points (24) and finishing second amongst all skaters. Register has been named ECHL Defenseman of the Year three times (2014, 2017, 2018).
