After many, and I mean many, attempts of trying to trade for Jake Guentzel as the GM of the Carolina Hurricanes in NHL 24, we got the deal done in the video above. However, the trade we completed in the game was nowhere close to the real-life deal.
My initial thoughts on the deal were that Pittsburgh did well in acquiring three solid prospects in the deal, but the picks they got were underwhelming due to the conditions on them.
Ville Koivunen is the top prospect here and has a real shot at becoming a top-six NHL forward. He plays with pace on and off the puck and is an equal part shooter and passer. He's having one of the best U21 seasons in Liiga history.
Cruz Lucius has middle-six scoring upside and a player who will feature on the powerplay. He’s more of a playmaker, though he does have a sneaky quick release. His puck skills and puck control in tight against defenders are fun to watch.
Vasili Ponomarev is the one prospect who is further along in his development due to his age. He could slide in and play some NHL games this year for Pittsburgh. He's a strong two-way center who's strong on his skates and plays with a high motor. He doesn't have a high ceiling, and he’s more likely to become a checking bottom-six centerman.
