The Pittsburgh Penguins traded forward Reilly Smith to the New York Rangers in exchange for two draft picks, we wanted to see if the trade would go through in NHL 24.
Smith recorded 13 goals and 40 points in 76 games for the Penguins last season. He was traded to the Rangers for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2027 second. Pittsburgh retained 25% of Smith's salary.
With this trade the Penguins save salary and pick up some draft picks while the Rangers hope Smith can return to offensive form after a down season.

In NHL 24 this trade did not go through when we proposed the deal as New York or when we proposed it as Pittsburgh.
We attempted to make the trade from both sides where we retained 50% of Smith's salary and tried one as New York where we attempted to absorb all of Smith's salary, neither of these options worked, all four trade proposals were denied.
Ultimately NHL 24 thinks neither team would do this deal, so that could be a good sign that both teams got what they wanted in real life.
